Intravenous conscious sedation

Fighting against anxiety during dental treatments through conscious sedation?

Dental treatments can provoke anxiety amongst many patients! It can hinder you from receiving the care that you need from your dentist. This is why intravenous sedation is an excellent method to be treated in comfort and without worry.

Medicinal conscious sedation means that all dental care performed will be done without any stress. Conscious sedation manages stress, anxieties, phobias, nauseous reflexes, and certain physical and mental deficiencies. Indeed, your level of consciousness is decreased enough that you no longer remember the treatment.

Who is conscious sedation for?

Intravenous conscious sedation suits the majority of patients. However, there are situations where it is not suitable:

  • Pregnancy
  • Lung problems
  • Severe obesity
  • Severe pharmacoligical allergies

How does conscious sedation work?

Conscious sedation consists of administering a medication intravenously:

  • Midazolam : changes the perception of time, procures huge nervous relaxation and induces amnesia of the operation.

We equally offer pharmological support which can include narcotics, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics according to the condition andt needs of the patient. All of these medications will be taken orally.

Our dental surgeon is trained to safely perform intravenous sedation following the training and the medical knowledge she possesses that she received at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and refresher courses she does every two years of her ACLS in accordance with the request of the ODQ.

If you are anxious with the idea of a dental tratment, an entire team will take car of you from the beggining till the end of the treatment. This team is dedicated to your security and well-being.

An initial consultation to accompany you before undergoing conscious sedation?

Before any treatment needing sedation, you must come for a consultation in order to best prepare you for the day of treatment.

During the consultation, the dentist will take charge of:

  • informing you of the precautions to take before the treatment
  • taking vital signs such as saturation, pulse, and pressure
  • perform a specific or complete dental exam with X-rays is necessary
  • discuss and take charge of your medication needs, your questions, and medical requirements
  • providing you with treatment plans with consents and eventual prescriptions

How to prepare before the dental treatment

  • Eat lightly 90 minutes before the operation.
  • Dress comfortably, prioritizing short sleeves
  • No nail polish
  • You have to be accompanied by an adult responsible for the appointment

Proceedings of the dental treatment under conscious sedation

Before the beggining of the operation, we put in place an IV in which the medications will be administered. In a few minutes, the sedation will start to take effect.

The sedation will enable you to stay conscious during the whole treatment and to respond to the commands of the dentist.

Après le traitement dentaire

Once the dental treatment is done, we will verbally and in writing transmit all that is necessary in order to have optimal convalescence:

  • Post-operational instructions
  • Medical prescriptions
  • Your specific needs

You will be discharged to the person you chose. This person must watch over you for 24 hours and will be legally responsible of you.

After a few hours and after, the effects of the medication administered by dentist will disappear.

A post-operation appointment will be proposed to you 7 to 14 days after the treatment. A telephone assistance will also be available for you at all times!
